Where To Drink Friday Night? (The Writers Room-L.A.)

The Writer’s Room, open usually for private events for industry names has finally after months debuted to the public. Tucked between Supperclub at the Vogue Theater and Musso & Frank (the oldest restaurant in Hollywood) the entrance is discreetly located into the alley behind this famous Hollywood restaurant. In its early days (when it belonged to this famed restaurant) it was referred to as the “back room,” where writers such as Raymond Chandler and F. Scott Fitzgerald were rumored to toss back gimlets. For the decoration high-back booths line one wall opposite the bar, softly lighted via sconces with a slightly Art Deco feel. The cozy bar’s most curious feature is an antique 1920s Parisian-style copper elevator cage that belonged to a building in New York.

For cocktails, they have selected former Doheny bartender Daniel Nelson but don’t expect a classic-heavy cocktail menu drawn from the 1930s here — instead, he’ll be using fresh local ingredients and draw on the diversity of L.A.’s different ethnic neighborhoods for libation inspiration. Expect drinks like the Kaffir Rickey (Vodka/Gin, Kaffir Lime Juice, Lemongrass Syrup, Carbonated Coconut Water), and Cho Sun One (Corn Whiskey, Korean Pear, Perilla Leaf, Lemon, Date, Sesame).

In an effort to bring back a taste of Old Hollywood glamour, principal owners Nur Khan (Rose Bar in NYC’s Gramercy Park Hotel), Holly Wiersma (film producer) and Abdi Manavi (supperclub) joined together with actors Jack Huston and Jason Segel, magazine editor Krista Smith and screenwriter William Monahan to revive the forgotten venue.

The place aiming to lure guests from analogous nearby scenes at Hemingway’s, the Roosevelt Hotel’s Teddy’s and the Spare Room, or Chateau Marmont.

The Writer’s Room, 6685 Hollywood Blvd. Hollywood. (but more like the alleyway north of Hollywood Blvd, Between Cherokee and Las Palmas Ave.)
