Last week I had the chance to be a guest bartender at Zen Bistro (Tampa) a new sushi restaurant with an innovative cocktail program (directed by GM Natalie Jane) where I had the chance to whip up some of my new libations with Russian Standard Gold which according to their website its “Russian Standard Gold is made from 100% Russian ingredients; hand harvested winter wheat from the Russian Black Steppes, soft glacial water from Lake Ladoga in Northern Russia, and carefully selected Siberian Golden Root (Siberian Ginseng) extracts creating a uniquely rich and exceptionally soft taste. Thankfully I had a bottle of Russian Standard Gold at home to experiment in a few cocktails.
- 2 oz. Russian Standard Gold Vodka
- 3 cubes of fresh Cantalupe
- 1/2 oz. Thyme Syrup
- 3/4 oz Fresh pressed Lemon juice
- 1 Egg white
- 4 dashes of Angostura Bitters
How to make Thyme syrup: in a pot add 2 cups of sugar and one cup of water and mix over medium heat for 5 minutes until completely mixed. Add a hand full of thyme into the newly made Simple syrup and let it cool off for one hour. Strain Thyme out off the syrup and rebottle.
Directions: In a mixing glass put ingredients except Angostura Bitters. Seal the mixing glass with a tin shaker and shake it with no ice initially (Dry shake to emulsify the egg white). Then pour ice into mixing glass and shake again vigorously for 15 seconds. Double strain with a second strainer into a martini glass. Add for separate dots of angostura bitters on top of the cocktail and with a skewer make a circular design.
